Tobacco Free Schools
As of August 1, 2008, all 115 school districts in North Carolina are 100% tobacco free. This means that no one (staff, students, visitors) is permitted to use any tobacco product at any time (including non-school hours) in any building, property or vehicle owned, leased, rented or contracted by the school district; on school grounds, athletic fields or parking lots; or at any school-sponsored event off campus.
All 3 school districts in Catawba County adopted 100% Tobacco Free Policies well ahead of the August 1, 2008 deadline. Hickory City Schools went tobacco free in 1991, with both Catawba County and Newton-Conover City Schools adopting 100% TFS policies in 2004.
